Gossip
“Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Blah.”
Identity: Gossip
Alignment: Good
Category: Townsfolk
Ability: Each day, you may make a public statement in the town square (inform the storyteller privately that you have). Tonight, if the statement was true, a player dies.
Summary: Every day, you can make a public statement in the group chat. For example: “I gossip that the Demon is a Pukka“, or: “I gossip that Amanda is evil”. It should be clear to both the storyteller and the other players that you are using the Gossip’s ability. If this statement turns out to be true, an extra player will die the following night. You do not get to know that they died because of your gossip, so keep an eye out for the number of deaths each night. It is up to the storyteller’s discretion who dies because of your gossip. It can even be you.
Tips for playing as the Gossip: If played right, your role can provide the good team with critical information. A lot of Gossips will be tentative about using their ability since they’re worried about causing a death accidentally. While it’s true you should be cautious with any ability that could cause death, the potential gain in information more than makes up for the risk. Use your ability every day! The Gossip is a good target for the Demon to kill. To conceal your identity in the town, you might want to ask other players to make gossip statements alongside you. This way the Demon doesn’t know which of you is the actual Gossip.
Tips for bluffing as the Gossip: There are roughly two ways to bluff as the Gossip – the safe way and the risky way. The safe way is to make safe statements, and do your best to give useless information to the group – this way, the good team is likely to believe that you are good, but ignore your information. Like bluffing as the Fool, this tends to be safe, but the lack of false information in the group discussion can bite you later on. The riskier way to bluff is to make your Gossip statements as controversial as possible, and do your best to convince the group that your false statements are true, and your true statements are false – this creates a lot of confusion and uncertainty. This can be riskier initially, but the increased level of false information in the group can work to your advantage.
